Self-Made Couture Measurement Guide

This guide will direct you to confidently take your measurements correctly and precisely from the comfort of your home.

What will you need:

  • Measuring tape (make sure that all your measurements are in centimeters)
  • Request a FREE Self-Made tape measure now!
    • Another person for assistance

    Procedure:

    Step 1:  Remove your accessories

    • Remove all the accessories you are wearing before you start any measurements

     Take the following items off before starting any measurements:

    1. Your belt
    2. Your shoes
    3. Remove anything in your pockets
    4. Remove watches or bracelets
    • Pro Tip: Change into tight-fitting clothes to achieve the best measurement result

      Step 2:  Relax your body and stand straight

      • Stand in your natural posture, legs slightly apart, arms relaxed at your side
      • DON’T flex your muscles or puff out your chest as we want your measurements to be as precise as possible

      Here are some reminders while doing the measurements

      1. Make sure to record all of your body measurements in CENTIMETERS (cm)
      2. While measuring keep one finger between the tape measure and the person’s body
      3. Make sure that the tape measure is level

      Step 3:  Start the body measurements NECK

      • Place the end of the measuring tape below your Adam’s apple 
      • Wrap the measuring tape around your neck following its natural curve 
      • Once it meets the other end, gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement

      SLEEVE LENGTH

      • Relax your arms
      • Place the end of the measuring tape on the bone at the top edge of your shoulder
      • Run the measuring tape down to your wrist (just past your wrist bone closer to your hand)
      • Take and record the measurement

      BICEP

      • Relax your arms at your side
      • Place the measuring tape under the under arm and relax the arm
      • Wrap the tape measure around your bicep in line with your nipples
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement

      FOREARM

      • Relax your forearms
      • Look for the widest part of your forearm (usually closer to the elbow)
      • Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your forearm
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement.

      WRIST

      • Relax your wrists
      • Look for your wrist bone
      • Wrap the tape measure around your wrist below your wrist bone
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement.SHOULDER
      • Relax your shoulders
      • Identify the bones at the top edge of each shoulder or where the arm and the shoulder meet
      • Place the end of the measuring tape on one edge
      • Run the tape over the neck/shoulder area to the other bone following the natural curve of your back
      • Be sure NOT to go straight across, there should be a upward curve
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurementCHEST
      • Raise your arms to where they are above your shoulders
      • Wrap the measuring tape around your chest under your armpits inline with your nipples
      • If you have large traps, back muscles, or a large back in general, be sure the measuring tape is wrapped around those wide areas
      • Make sure that the tape measure is level all the way around the torso
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurementSTOMACH
      • Relax your stomach
      • Raise your arms above your shoulders
      • Wrap the tape measure around your stomach in line with your belly button or the largest/widest part of the belly area
      • Make sure that the tape measure is level all the way around the torso
      • Relax arms back down to the side
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurementFRONT JACKET LENGTH
      • Relax your arms
      • Place the end of the measuring tape at the highest point of your shoulder (close to your neck)
      • Run the measuring tape down to your torso until it is inline with your first thumb joint (or your desired jacket length) - Length should cover ¾ of your buttocks
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurementWAIST
      • Locate the part of your waist where you wear your dress pants
      • Wrap the tape measure around that part of your waistline
      • Make sure that the tape measure is level all the way around the torso
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement.HIPS/BUTTOCKS
      • Relax your hips/buttocks
      • Locate the widest part of your buttocks and hips
      • Wrap the tape measure on the widest part of your buttocks and hips
      • Make sure that the tape measure is level all the way around
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurementLEG LENGTH
      • On one side of the hips, look for the part where your waist is
      • Mark a point on that part and place the end of the measuring tape
      • Run the measuring tape down your leg from that point to the bottom of your foot
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurementCROTCH
      • Place the measuring tape on your pants button or where your trousers start on the front of your pants (holding the metal tip of the tape measure in place with one finger)
      • Bring the tape measure through the legs and up the back seam of your pants
      • End the measurement where your pants waist end on the back of your pants
      • Keep the tape measure centered and snug
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement


      LEG INSEAM

      • Stand straight
      • Locate the lowest part of your crotch area
      • Place the end of the measuring tape on that part
      • Make sure that the tape is tight along the inside of your leg
      • Run the tape measure down your leg from that point to the bottom of your feet
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement
      THIGH
      • Locate the widest part of your thigh just below your crotch
      • Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your thigh
      • Angle the tape measure upward around the widest part of your thigh
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement

      KNEE

      • Locate the widest part of your kneecap
      • Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your kneecap
      • Make sure that the tape measure is in level all the way around
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measure

      CALF MUSCLE

      • Locate the widest part of your calf muscle
      • Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your calf muscle
      • Make sure that the tape measure is in level all the way around
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement

      ANKLE

      • Wrap the tape measure around your ankle
      • Make sure that the tape measure is in level all the way around
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement(OPTIONAL) VEST FRONT LENGTH
      • Relax your arms
      • Place the end of the measuring tape at the highest point of your shoulder (close to your neck)
      • Run the measuring tape down your torso until it is 2 centimeters pass your waistline or belt
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement

      (OPTIONAL) VEST BACK LENGTH

      • Relax your arms
      • Place the end of the measuring tape on your back at the base of the neck
      • Run the measuring tape down the back of your torso until it is at the bottom of your pants belt band
      • Gently pull the measuring tape to tighten
      • Take and record the measurement

      (OPTIONAL) SHORT SLEEVE LENGTH

      • Relax your arms
      • Place the end of the measuring tape on the bone at the top edge of your shoulder
      • Run the measuring tape down to where you want your short sleeve to end
      • Take and record the measurement

      Step 4:  Submit your measurements HERE

      • Fill in each cell on the measurement form with your recorded measurements
      • Click the Submit button
